The Road Bike Tires You Ride On Matter

Tires are a hot topic among road bike riders. Everybody wants a great quality tire that will never go flat. I’ve learned that nothing is "puncture proof." Even top brand high quality road bike tires can go flat. If there’s something on the road that’s sharp enough, it will cut through any tire. So every rider should expect to fix a flat at some point during one of their rides.

That’s why every rider should always carry tire levers, a good pump, a patch kit, a new tube, and know how to use them before they hit the road. Repairing a flat is always learned best at home instead of at the side of a busy road. But when those flats get too numerous maybe it’s time to change your tires.

If you’re looking for the best quality road bike tires you should consider one of several top brands before they buy. Here are several brands you can purchase both online and in the stores: Continental, Vittoria, Michelin, CST, and there’s a lot more. So now the question is how do I know which one I should buy?

In my opinion there are three things you need to come to terms with, size, tread and quality.

Size is really a fairly basic decision. Most road bikes ride on 700 mm tires so it is the second number that needs a decision. The smaller that number like 18mm the harder the ride but the faster it will go down the road. The larger the number 35mm the more comfortable the ride and the more weight it will carry but the harder it will be to make your bike go fast. For general riding in and around town with a occasional longer ride I would suggest a 700x25.

The tread differences are significant and which one is best for you will depend more on the roads you’re riding on, the weather condition and the type of riding you want to do. For racing again the faster you want to go the less tread you want to have. When it comes to racing tires often the kind of rubber they use in the tire is what gives it its grip to the road instead of the tread.

When it comes to quality though I’m talking about it last in no way does that mean it is least important. In my opinion you should buy the best quality tires you can afford. They are what are between you and the road and safety while riding is of primary importance. If you are tearing down the road in traffic and have a flat anything could happen and I would not want you to end up getting hurt over a few bucks not spent on tires.

There is one more thing you should consider when it comes to tires and that is brand. All of the manufacturers I mentioned above are top quality and make tires that will typically stand up to the everyday abuse of riding on our roads these days. I also said there are many more but of those you will have to be weary. Some will give you a top quality product others will not. And in fact all manufacturers sell different qualities of tire so make sure you know what you’re buying.

Road bikes are made to go fast and for longer distance rides. The road bike tires you have on your bike make a difference to achieving your goals and for staying safe. My advice is buy quality stay safe.
