The Role Of Effective Leadership

Leadership is the electric current that powers the motor, the ingredient that energizes the battery, the force that transforms chaos into order, the insight that converts despair into hope and transforms mediocre performance into a superior one. Therefore, there is no substitute for effective leadership. Management alone cannot bring success to an organization. If managers want to succeed, they must cultivate these skills. Leading is not just a necessity but it is an inborn requirement in any business.

Many management experts state certain principles for effective leadership, namely the principle of harmony of objectives, which calls for alignment of personal goals with enterprise objectives. The principle of maximum clarity and integrity in communications states that communication should be clear and unambiguous so as to support understanding by individuals which in turn can enable them to achieve co-operation which is required to meet the enterprise goals. Next is the principle of motivation and effective leadership, which clearly states that managers who are keen on evolving as effective leaders should carefully assess the reward structure and integrate it into the entire system of managing.

Leaders should be able to convince their people about the need for change. They are "masters of change." They have to identify the need for change, set up plans for accomplishing change, and persuade followers to follow new paths. They need to be an advocate of change. Leaders should be high achievers so as to inspire and energize their followers from the front position so as to point the way, from the middle so as to encourage the majority and at the end to pick up stragglers.

Creativity helps improve the efficiency and capabilities of leaders. In short, an able manager is someone who can make ordinary people do extraordinary things, achieving results which are impossible. Managers are visionaries who challenge people to achieve exceptionally high levels of morality, motivation and performance. These people shape the corporate culture and values. For the optimal performance of an organization it is necessary to have such star performers who are not only capable of brilliant ideas but also have the ability to inspire brilliant thoughts and actions in others.

A good leader cultivates loyalty and commitment to the firm and its ideals. He sustains his employees devotion to their work. He motivates his people to look towards the general interest rather than their individual interests. He attempts to remove rivalries and dividing forces among employees. He strives to maintain friendly relations in the company.

A great motivator tries to develop the spirit of coordination among employees and provides direction for unifying individual efforts. He creates self-confidence and enthusiasm among his employees. He acts as a reservoir of zeal, strength and vigor to his subordinates. Thus, a great leader is one who transforms dreams into reality.
