The Sr-22 As Related To Auto Insurance
Every state now requires that you maintain some minimum form of insurance. The interesting thing is that insurance requirement is entirely different from state to state. This is because each state maintains a Department of Insurance in one form or another that sets forth its own regulations and rules regarding insurance. Complying with all of these is a living nightmare for most insurance companies. It also explains while you'll find some insurance companies in certain states, but not in others. They simple can't or don't find it financially wise to spend the money to comply with every state. So, what is an SR-22? It is one of the rare common things you'll find in auto insurance in just about every state. The SR-22 is a document that is filed with the Department of Motor Vehicles in each state that shows a driver has insurance. In most states, you insurer automatically sends it in to the DMV. Importantly, the SR-22 is not insurance, it is just a certificate verifying that you now have car insurance. If the SR-22 is just a form, why is there so much discussion regarding it? The SR-22 is the form that you have to obtain if you get penalized for driving without insurance. Judges frown severely upon people that drive without insurance. They usually will give said drivers a very short time to get it in place or they will be fined and/or ordered to jail. In many cases, the court will also suspend your license. This makes getting that SR-22 on file a critical step. The requirements to obtain the SR-22 differ from state to state. Generally, you are going to have to buy more insurance than you normally would. If you need an SR-22, it is usually because you've been caught driving without insurance. You are in trouble. The court is going to force you to carry more to make you "financially responsible". It is also going to make you carry the SR-22 for three years or so. Basically, you can think of it is a probationary exercise. Driving without auto insurance is not a smart move. When you get caught without it, you are going to be on the nail end of a hammering in court. You are going to end up paying so much more than you would have if you had just purchased it that it won't be funny. Don't risk it. Buy car insurance.
