The Security Blame Game

Google overtakes Microsoft in reported security vulnerabilities:
that’s the catchy title that made the news last week. This relates to a report from Trend Micro, a well-known security and anti-virus entity that assessed the major security concerns on the IT software that we are using. Their findings showed that Google products top Microsoft and Oracle in terms of security vulnerability. Although the study is not specifically geared toward cloud computing solutions from those big editors, the interesting thing is that, as opposed to what is commonly “believed” in the software world, security affects every player- no editor is safe from security breaches and threats – be them Google, Microsoft, Oracle, or even the small software company that works in a very specific niche.
In fact, security threats are part of the software industry, the same as bugs are a part of your Summer.

As software introduces new features, and grows at a very quick pace (new versions are released while the former one hasn’t yet been deployed to its full potential), it’s more than common to see that some codes aren’t as well tested as they should have been. What’s more, as solutions and software are going mainstream thereby becoming very popular, they are more vulnerable - the target of every malware, virus and security threat. The reason behind it is simple: people want to be recognised to be the one who ‘made it’ - who actually deciphered the software so as to prove that they are smarter; moreover, mainstream software is a great means to get your attack spread all over the world.

How does all this relate to you, as a business owner?

Unless you’re really passionate about the latest security breach in the business world, chances are that you don’t even want to deal with such issues. You only want to be informed about the recommended behaviors to adopt when you are facing some potential threats, and that’s it. The fact that the tools you are using may pose some potential security issues, while it will always exist, doesn’t have to be your full-time occupation.
You can eventually rely on your local IT to manage it, but experience has shown that at the end of the day, one local IT wouldn’t be able to react as quickly as he would want to whenever a security threat has been identified all over the world. It’s just impossible, unless he tells everybody to stop using the related IT systems while he fixes everything. However, as a manger you would surely want your employees to be working full-time? But on the other hand, you can’t just setup a huge IT Team to manage everything.
This is where a Hosted Exchange solution comes handy for your e-mail and collaboration tools - which represent a huge portion of your IT needs. Since we know that security breaches are considered part of any IT setup, why don’t we just leave it to the experts who deal with it on a daily basis? That’s what a Hosted Exchange solution is: they run all the back office IT systems, and you, as a customer, just remain a user who doesn’t have to worry so much about those concerns.
