"the Shocking Truth About Diet Pills"

Most all diet pill manufacturers go to lengths to tell us that they use natural ingredients that can help you live longer and only contain alcohol used in flavouring or medication. However, there is one golden rule - never take diet pills until you have consulted your doctor. Your weight problem may be medically related and also cutting calories is not always the best solution.
If you do take diet pills as part of your weight loss plan, remember the following:
1. Take them only with water and do not crush them or mix them with soups or other drinks.
2. Most diet pills are diuretic in nature and will likely make you urinate more often which can lead to dehydration. It makes sense, therefore, to be sure that you drink plenty of water whilst taking diet pills.
3. Follow the instructions and keep do not exceed the dose recommended on the packet. Not only will taking too many pills not help you lose weight faster, but can also lead to unwanted side effects.
4. Check your pulse regularly - if it starts to go about 90 beats per minute at rest, stop taking the diet pills immediately.
5. Follow the instructions of your doctor or nutritionist - they will only work if part of a regular diet plan.
6. Never take diet pills for more than 3 months. Some studies show that taking them long term can cause health problems.
Diet pills come in two categories - over the counter and those on prescription from your doctor. Prescription diet pills are regulated (the FDA in the USA) and known side effects stated on the packet, together with recommended dosages. You will discover a popular pill called Xenical. This pill has a licence to be taken long term but also has known side effects, in particular, diarrhea and oily (sometimes unexpected) fecal discharge. You are recommended to be on a low fat diet if you take this pill as part of your weight loss plan.
Over the counter diet pills are not regulated and often labelled as food substitutes. These can cause serious side effects, sometimes deadly ones - be warned!
You can get good advice from nutritionists, dieticians and also your pharmacist. They can tell you what may be safe for the person in each individual case. The best thing here is not to buy over the counter drugs unless you also get advice. Care needs to be taken when going for diet pills that claim to be natural or organic in nature. Just because it occurs in nature, does not mean it is safe! For example, Ma Huang is a natural source of ephedrine, a known stimulant, and is currently under investigation as to its side effects.
Do not take diet pills if you have a family history of high blood pressure, thyroid or prostrate problems, or heart or mental health illnesses. This is especially true if you have had any sort of seizure or stroke. It is common sense, but never take diet pills if you are taking medication of any sort, unless you do so under instructions from your doctore - even cough/cold medicine, including decongestants, can cause complications.
Diet pills of either description that control your appetite (appetite supressants) have side effects that include depression, high temperature, chest ailments, hair loss and even impotence.
A golden rule for ladies - never take a diet pill if you think you are pregnant!
Allergies - if you are allergic to sulfites and tartrazine, do not take diet pills.
If you are under 18 or over 60 - you must first talk it over with your doctor.
The plain and simple truth is that there is no real replacement for exercise and diet. You need to change your lifestyle and make exercise and healthy eating a way of life - sure, diet pills are a short term answer, but never good for you long term, as they can cause many side effects and even shorten your life expectancy!
