The Simple Way To Enjoy Wine

As a wine merchant, it is my job to advise people on which wines they will enjoy and which will go with certain meals and occasions. However, I always come across so many who are afraid to take the leap and try something new – they prefer to stick to their Merlots and Pinot Grigios to avoid spending money on something that they might not like.

Choosing a new wine can be a very scary thing because taste is so personal to the individual. Some people prefer their reds deep and spicy where others need a fruiter taste. Some will only enjoy whites if they crisp and dry, where others love a sweeter flavour.

Over the years I have learned that while there are wines that are considered to be better than others by professionals, at the end of the day it comes down to what the customer prefers. They can never be right or wrong so long as they enjoy the wine they have purchased.

So when being brave and looking for something new, don’t be afraid to ask for a taste first. Going along to public wine tastings is a great way of trying a range of wines you might never buy for fear of not liking it.

Many wine merchants also offer ‘at home’ wine tastings allowing you to sample different wines in the comfort of your own home, with friends or family, before placing an order.

When in a restaurant or bar, don’t be scared to ask the waiter or bar attendant for which wines might be similar to wines you have enjoyed in the past. They should be more than willing to help – even if just for a bigger tip at the end!

So now, I challenge all readers to be bold – try new wines and flavours. There are so many varieties out there that you will be sure to find several new ones you like. You don’t have to get into the realms of ‘connoisseur’ to find good wines, you just have to be willing to try something different!
