The Simplest Homemade Liquid Soap

Liquid soap has become a necessity in a world where people are more focused on hygiene and cleanliness. People believe that when you have soap in its liquid form, it is definitely cleaner in the sense that less people touch it. Though many doctors have said that the difference between liquid and bar soaps are minimal in terms of cleanliness, many people still prefer the liquid form, especially when they need to wash their hands.

A homemade liquid soap is one of the easier soap making projects. The ingredients involved are easy to find and the process is really simple. Like many soap recipes, homemade liquid soaps give you a lot of room for creativity, as you will see when you read the process presented here.

To make a homemade liquid soap, you simply need a 4 ounce bar of soap (grated) and eight cups of water. If you are using a commercial soap bar, you may want to add two tablespoons of glycerine to your mixture. If you are using a handmade soap bar, on the other hand, glycerine will not be necessary since the handmade soap should have a good amount of glycerine in it already.

The first step to a homemade liquid soap is to grate the soap bar. Once this is done, you should have about two cups of grated soap. Next, heat the eight cups of water in a pot. Once the water begins to steam or starts simmering, take it off the heat and add the grated soap. Even if you've taken it off the heat, the soap will melt in the water. Stir it slowly till all the soap bits have melted. If you're adding glycerine, do so now.

Once all the soap bits have melted (after about a quarter of an hour), mix the soap with a stick blender to make sure that the mixture is even. When you've achieved an even consistency (no more soap bits), let the mixture sit overnight. It should take this particular homemade liquid soap about 12 or more hours to “set.”

In the morning, check the soap to make sure that everything stayed well blended and in liquid form. It should actually be gel-like in consistency. You may want to blend it one more time with your stick blender then let it set for a few minutes. Some people choose to blend it a third time, but by now your homemade liquid soap should be ready for use. You can pour it into a bottle with a pump nozzle and place them beside the sinks in your home!

To add fragrance to your soap, simply add a few drops of fragrance oil to the mixture before the initial blending stage. Remember not to add to much, though, as too much fragrance oil can make the soap smell too strongly, as well as give it a drying quality towards skin. For a unique twist to homemade liquid soap, steep some strong chamomile tea in the eight cups of water before adding the soap. This will give your soap some of the properties of the tea. You can try this with other herbal teas as well!
