Many new entrepreneurs jump on the domain name speculation bandwagon every day but very few of these inexperienced traders ever complete the ride without falling off. The reason for the high failure rate is simple. Popular misconception teaches us to horde hundreds of domain names, park them and monetize them with advertisements, wait for the thousands of Internet surfers to land on our parked domain pages, and reap the revenue rewards. This sounds like a sound concept, playing the numbers game, but in reality it just doesn't work that way.
The simple fact is that your domain name must match a keyword that is popular and frequently searched by the Internet community. Using combination keywords doesn't work if one of your keywords is so specialized that no one will ever enter the word in a search box. "zabberhoff-photography.com" will probably remain undiscovered until a Zaberhoff family member decides to search the family name. Of course, you could spend thousands of dollars promoting a domain named Zaberhoff Photography. But what's the point if there are thousands of Internet consumers already interested in wildlife photography? You patiently wait for visitors after depleting your advertising budget and your competitor, who might own "wildlife-photography.com", enjoys explosive revenue results without spending a dime on advertising. Get the point?
Choose your domain names wisely and use one of the many keyword tools available on the Internet to determine what words are currently popular in the search industry. One word domain names are the most valuable but it is said that 90% of all dictionary words have been registered. So focus on search phrases that truly reflect the theme you want to associate with your domain name. Most people will narrow their search since they are not interested in combing through pages of URLs that might not offer exactly what they want. Your keyword research should focus on two or three word search phrases and the odds will be in your favor that you will find a suitable and dynamic domain name using variations of the search phrase keywords.
Lastly, do not be overly concerned with the lack of .COM available domain names. Remember that most highly coveted .COM names were acquired long ago. A .COM domain name will bring much more at auction for a speculator. But if you are interested in making money with parked domain names, then a .NET or even a .INFO domain will get you just as much visibility and traffic from search engines. There is no reason in this day and age that you wouldn't be able to acquire the perfect domain name using the less common extensions such as .BIZ .INFO and .US for example.
The secret to success, when it comes to domain name parking, is to register domain names rich with appropriate keyword content. Give it a little thought beforehand. Make use of the free keyword tools on the Internet. Prepare your short wishlist of domain name possibilities. Visit your favorite domain name seller or auction and bulk search the names you have compiled. A few well-targeted domain names will produce much more revenue than dozens or hundreds of pointless domain names.
