The Smell Of Success

Powerful people, you can smell them. Have you noticed? They don’t only look successful, they smell like it too; crisp, clean, fresh and well looked after. You can close your eyes in a crowd, and you can tell by a person’s smell, if the person next to you or behind you is a powerful and successful person.

I know mom taught us that it is rude to stare at people, but don’t you find it fascinating to try and determine by smell if a person is successful or not? Have you in fact tried it before? Next time you stand in line, waiting for whatever service or in some crowd somewhere, try it; close your eyes and smell. No, no, don’t go sniffing like a dog. Just take a careful deep breath as if you are about to sigh, now hold it a bit. And slowly release the breath, as if you have decided not to sigh after all. What smell do you detect in that deep breath you have just taken? In a flotsam of people, you can smell people’s body odor. Clean people have a crisp smell about them. They exude the smell of personal care and hygiene. They have a fresh smell about them. You can clearly smell old body odor if a person hasn’t washed, showered or bathed. How often have you tried to move out of the vicinity of just such a person with bad body odor?

Why is it that some people take pride in how they present themselves to the world? Even down to the way they smell; down to their favorite perfume. You do not need to wear some expensive perfume in order to “smell” successful. By being fresh and clean, you are already halfway there. Just as long as you don’t try to hide some bad smell with perfume. Worst mistake you can make if you want to make a good first impression, and a total waste of a special smell.

What about yourself? Are you smelling of success? Or are you trying to hide something with the perfume you are wearing? Make use of the power of smell. It is a powerful tool, if you utilize it to your advantage. You may think wearing a popular perfume like Hugo Boss may make up or cover up an unwashed and un-kept body, but you will be making a huge mistake. Never try to mask some body odor with a perfume, you will simply end up smelling like a skunk!

So next time you are in a lift, a checkout line, or in a big crowd and you don’t want to turn around and appear rude, play the “smell of success game”. Take a deep, slow breath, hold it a bit, and smell if you can determine if the person behind or next to you is successful or not by detecting a crisp fresh smell or an old, stale smell, trying to be camouflaged by some powerful perfume or cologne.
