WOW is about all you can say about this 78 year old actor. He has now achieved that pinnacle that most can only dream about attaining. Best known for his role as Dirty Harry, Eastwood gives the performance of a lifetime in Grand Torino.
Eastwood plays the character Walt Kowalski, a retired military veteran who takes no nonsense. He is a widower and and is trying to live out the rest of his days in peace without interference form outsiders. He begins to form a relationship with the young teen next door, Thao (played by new comer Bee Vang), after he steals Walt's Gran Torino as part of a gang initiation. In an attempt to payback his debt, Thao begins to Shadow Walt and to learn how to become a real man.
While forming this relationship the two begin to learn from each other and Wealth begins to grow more tolerant to The culture as Thao becomes more responsible for his actions. Although it is your basic foe to friends tale the acting is incredible and Eastwood gives a serious performance that is unintentionally humorous at times.
The casting in this film is extremely interesting, because honestly I think that it is the first time that I have seen Clint Eastwood act with a group of amateurs including a group of real gang members, truly adding to the flavor of this film. I also very much enjoyed seeing him play a character his own age, instead of the younger characters that he tends to portray.
Shot in Detroit , and between his filming of the Changeling, I believe this is an impressive film and a truly notable performance without the big bucks of a super production. Gran Torino is honestly one of the best Eastwood films that I have ever seen, and the complex, powerful and surprising tender storyline has given way to a whole new side of this actor. It is an incredible film and one that should not be missed by Eastwood fans or anyone that enjoys a movie that wraps you up in the characters and keeps you wanting more.
