The Spoof Vs The Remix

I recently heard someone equate a techno remix to a spoof. I find it odd that these two terms have become synonymous in some areas of our culture and wanted to expound on the differences.

The essential differentiation comes down to the execution of the content. One could argue that things like intent, style, sense of humor, tone, and technical aspects are also factors of differentiation but all of these are abstract and subject to debate. The more hard-lined separation however is the use or incorporation of original vs recycled material. The classic spoof is a completely original recording using the original ideas that spawned the material being spoofed.

Did the producers of 300 sue the producers of Meet the Spartans? No. Why? Because Meet the Spartans had their own script, their own actors, and their own original footage. You can’t copyright an idea. Only a script or a recording. Something tangible. A specific execution. Therefore the spoof is mocking the original using the guise of parody.

A techno remix on the other hand doesn’t bother re-recording the material. It takes footage or recordings of pre-existing material and mixes it up, re-edits, recycles it to create a re-imagining of the same original content with a wide range of moods, styles, meanings, and interpretations.

The creation of original media is the key discriminating factor between the two. A techno remix is an art form of its own, deserving of the same respect any mix artist, pop artist, or oral storyteller. Just because you didn’t write the original, does that mean you can’t tell your own version of the story?
