The Start Of A Great Headline

A headline is the main entry into your sales letter or web page. A headline is your chance of grabbing your prospect's attention. It will determine if your prospect will want to read the rest of your message. Remember, on average, about 80% of your prospects will read the headline but not the rest of your letter.

A headline is most effective when you speak directly to your prospect. The message in your headline must convey the benefits that your prospect is looking for. Your prospect wants to know what is in it for him/her, otherwise they’ll just move on until they come across a better headline that states the benefits they are looking for. Before you start to write your headline, there are a few things that you need to do first.

The first thing you need to do is do your research. Find out everything you need to know about your prospect. Put yourself in your prospect’s shoes and understand their thoughts and feelings. This will make them more likely to buy from you because you are building rapport with them by understanding where they are coming from.

Then you need to get organized and create a swipe file. A swipe file is nothing more than a collection of advertisements, headlines, and sales letters that catch your eye. You just cut these out from newspapers and magazines so you can use as a reference. Study them and write them out by hand so you can understand the writer’s perspective. This should be your warm-up exercise every time you need to write a headline or sales letter.

Understand your product or service thoroughly. What are the benefits that your product or service has to offer. Most people want to know what they are going to get out of your offer. So, as a marketer, you need to know what kind of benefits your product or service can offer to your prospect rather than tell them all the cool features it has. Your features may be important to you, but your prospect wants to know how he/she will benefit from it.

Scan the competition before you create your headline. Find out how your competitors are reaching your prospects. Create a headline that will approach your prospect from a different angle than your competitors. Find out what they are not doing and do it.

These are just some of the things you need to consider before you write your headline. If you follow these fundamental guidelines, you’ll be well on your way to writing a great headline and more sales.
