The Story Behind Organic Coffee

Many of us are now aware of the existence of organic coffee. And because it is organic, we are sure we are getting health benefits as well as being able to help the environment. But how is organic coffee being produced? How can we guarantee that what we bought from the store really is organic coffee?

Before anything else, we should first know where organic coffee is being grown. Throughout the world there are three primary countries which produce organic coffee. These countries are Ethiopia, Uganda, Mexico and Peru. About 75% of the production in the world comes from Latin America, while all the specialty and premium coffees come from the Arabica Coffee trees of Ethiopia and Uganda.

After this coffee has gone through all the things it needs for production, it will then need to be given an organic certification so that it can be sold in the United States as organic coffee. There are also requirements which it should meet. One of them is that it should be grown on land for three years without the use of synthetic pesticides, artificial fertilizers or the other chemicals substances that are prohibited. In addition, there should be an adequate buffer between the closest traditional crop and the new batch of organic coffee. There should also be a plan for sustainable crop rotation as long term plantation can produce soil depletion and even erosion.

When it comes to determining if the coffee we bought is organic or not, it is important to look for the seal of the Organic Trade Association or the Department of Agriculture.
