The Top 5 Mickey Rourke Films For Satellite Tv Viewers In Texas
Mickey Rourke’s comeback became definitive when The Wrestler was released to much acclaim, but he’s actually never left the radar completely. His roles in films like Sin City and Buffalo ‘66 projected a more damaged version of the guy remembered as Motorcycle Boy in Rumble Fish, but nonetheless the persona was intact. Rourke as always been the ruffled cool guy with a dangerous edge. Here are his five best films playing on satellite TV in Texas.
5. The Pope of Greenwich Village. Along with wild card Eric Roberts, Rourke romps through Greenwich Village as the guy with the beautiful girl (Daryl Hannah) and the cool clothes but not much else. Roberts suggests they try their hand at a little larceny, which doesn’t impress a local mob boss who turns out to be the owner. Featuring one of the best barber shop scenes of all time, Rourke shines in the film, playing on satellite TV in Dallas on the Independent Film Channel.
4. Angel Heart. For fans of film noir, Angel Heart is a great modern exercise in the genre, though the action takes place in the 1950s. Rourke plays a private detective of a time gone by, one who uncovers more than he bargained for in pursuit of information. Featuring a spooky departure to New Orleans, a dramatically cast-against-type Lisa Bonet and a frightening Robert De Niro, Angel Heart has Rourke at his best and most daring.
3. Sin City. There are many ways to describe Sin City, based on the Frank Miller graphic novel, but it’s basically a comic book for grownups. Director Robert Rodriguez handled the complications very well, using real actors against a fantastic backdrop. Rourke gets one of his meatiest modern roles, as the sadistic avenger of a lost love. A star-studded film by any standards, Sin City also features Bruce Willis and Clive Owen in major roles. See this film on HBO in high definition for the ultimate satellite TV experience in Texas.
2. Barfly. While Rourke had established himself as a sex symbol in 9 1/2 Weeks, he made one of his best movies by shedding the star persona and portraying one of literary history’s grubbiest characters: Henry Chinaski, the name used by Charles Bukowski for his autobiographical stand-in. Barbet Schroeder directs and Faye Dunaway co-stars as Chinaski’s unhinged love interest.
1. The Wrestler. The ride back to the top had its share of bumps for Rourke and he shares a lot in common with Randy “the Ram” Robinson, wrestling champ doomed to small gigs while living in a trailer in New Jersey. Darren Aronofsky’s hit film featured Marisa Tomei and was praised from all sides, Rourke’s performance garnering unending acclaim. He didn’t get the Oscar (Sean Penn did), but he certainly could have. Check satellite TV premium networks and On-Demand options for this film.
