Making smart decisions regarding new technologies always depends on a person being well informed—there’s just no other way about the matter. When it comes to wireless internet, for example, it is important to realize that the technology has been around for several years already and that many exhaustive research experiments and test runs have been carried out, all of which puts this technology in a much more solid position today than when such efforts began. The result is that while mobile internet connections were a vanity thing a few years back, aimed mostly at improving friends but not at actually accomplishing much, today the technology is highly functional and proving much more dynamic than most people realize. Of particular relevance has been the introduction of fourth generation mobile communications standards and a general shift among communications providers towards WiMax transmission systems (due to their superior range and data speeds). Here are five things to keep in mind in this regard:
1) You’ll be blown away by the performance. Wireless connections will never be the same again, as they are now finally well within the realm of “high performance” technologies. Unlike the wireless connections of yesteryear that offered a few pathetic Mbit/s, with 4G standards data speeds are moving along at approximately 100 Mbit/s in the best of cases. Not only have the speeds gone up drastically, but other improvements have also been implemented that help keep connections strong and running, such as reductions in interruptions and greater interoperability without the need for reconfiguration.
2) Wireless is for your home, too. Up until now, wireless access has been taken as a synonym for internet outside the home or a WiFi router within a LAN environment. That is no longer the case thanks to WiMax, which is now bringing wireless access directly to customers in their homes without the need of any cables whatsoever. That’s right: the IP simply uses a series of communications towers with powerful transmitters that are within range of each other, and if you are within the range of one of these towers (within about a mile’s distance) you will have coverage.
3) Pricing is better than you expect. Indeed, the earlier you hop onto this bandwagon the better off you will be—and rest assured, practically everybody will hop on sooner or later. To help promote these new technologies, companies are offering limited-time-only introductory rates for the first round of customers, and this could ultimately mean getting a better connection for less than what you are currently paying for a mediocre service involving yesterday’s technology.
4) No more hotspot nonsense. With WiMax transmission technology, the whole idea of hotspots is going to be an idea of the past, making way for new terminology to describe truly vast areas of wireless coverage. Currently limited to entire metropolitan areas, soon enough entire chunks of the country will be blanketed—until the day when you can’t find a spot without reception.
5) Room for improvement. The best feature of 4G technology is its ability to incorporate future developments and advances, which is a perfect reason to go ahead and subscribe to these kinds of services. You’ll never get left behind again!
