Pharmacokinetics is an important and complex subject, which refers to what the human body does to a certain medication when used, differing from a related subject pharmacodynamics which refers to the effects medication causes on the human body. Pharmacokinetics is an increasingly important topic because doctors need to be aware of the different pharmacokinetic parameters and understand how the body reacts to different drugs, what happens once it is consumed, and how it reacts in the body. The absorption rate of a particular medication, for instance, would be determined using pharmacokinetics study.

There are different areas in which the study of pharmacokinetics is divided up into: liberation, absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion. The analysis methods are some of the most important, and there are varying areas of study, which include but are not limited to non-compartmental analysis, compartmental analysis, and bioanalytical analysis. There is also an integrated study known as population pharmacokinetics, which refers to the study of the sources and the differences of the effects of the body on drugs among different individuals. From this doctors are able to understand what to prescribe to certain patients, for instance which medications which may be harmful to patients with kidney problems such as kidney disease.

There are certain different formulas, which define the basic pharmacokinetic parameters, which are especially important. That includes, besides absorption rate constant, which has the formula of the rate of drug absorption divided by the amount of drug remaining to be absorbed, the distribution of the drug, and the elimination of the drug through the body. This refers to the rate of elimination of the drug through the body, clearance, renal clearance, metabolic clearance, fraction of excretion exchanged, and the biologic half-life of the drug.

These formulas often produce different results depending on certain patient factors. For instance a patient’s generic makeup, sex, and age are all major factors in determining the pharmacokinetics of a drug. Other factors can also play minor roles, such as dietary factors, liver function, renal function, stress, behavior, alcohol intake and other lifestyle and other factors. Different people respond differently to certain medications, and through the study of pharmacokinetics scientists are able to understand these differences and help doctors to determine the proper drugs to suggest to patients, based on these factors.

The study of pharmacokinetics is extremely important, in order to ensure patients are given the proper medications, the right drugs to help their symptoms or help them recover from medical dysfunction. Doctors and scientists are constantly studying and using the study of pharmacokinetics to determine how different people respond to different drugs. The study of pharmacokinetics is obviously important and only continues to gain in urgency as more medications are required and scientists are constantly trying to find new drugs that are an improvement on old versions. The field of drug therapy and the studies of the effects of the body on different medications can help people achieve better overall health and avoid dangerous complications as a result of taking medications.
