The Truth About “cookies”

The impact that cookies have on the internet and our computers today has sparked controversies all over the web about what the best way to manage your cookies is.

Cookies are what your computer saves things in that relates to your internet use. Cookies help you log on to websites by remembering passwords and they can take information from your geographic location and combine it with your searches and websites viewed to generate data and statistics for advertisers to use to help them in their campaigns.

Cookies can take up a lot of space on your computer and slow it down. It can also save your personal information which you may not want it so save. For example, if you have made recent online purchases with a credit card, your credit card number may be saved in your computer’s cookies.

Since it is basically a known fact that you should delete your cookies, everyone always says that they delete their cookies. Most of them believe that they really do too. They do not realize that they very infrequently delete their cookies.
To all of the people who are telling people that they need to delete their cookies, you may not be as right as you think you are. Recent studies have shown that your cookies have very little to no impact in your computer’s performance over an extended period of time.
There has been no research to this date that has concluded with results that not deleting your cookies often can have any affect on a user’s online experience.

Deleting cookies or not deleting cookies is not the only debate that they raise. They are constantly collecting anonymous data from people and building profiles to help advertisers match their ads with consumers who are interested in what they have to offer.

This debate has changed the main reason that people now delete cookies. It used to just be that people wanted to clean up their memory and space on their computer but now their cookies are full of data specific to an individual’s computer history that is used to create a profile and help advertisers target certain people. People now delete their cookies to avoid being profiled every time they are on their computer.

There are two sides to this debate over whether cookies are becoming too intrusive or not. Some people say that they are far too intrusive and that there is no reason that they should be able to collect any data from you to build a profile even if it is anonymous. Other people say that the data collected is nameless and therefore it does not matter so you might as well help out advertisers.
Options for Internet Users

The tough part about cookies is that they do not benefit everyone. For people who have no use for them, it is hard to convince them that they should allow their internet data to be collected when it does no good for them personally.

The only way to truly convince someone that cookies are a good thing is to let them know how cookies make their online internet experience better without them even knowing it. Since cookies are used by advertising companies to decide which ads to display to which groups of people, you see less ads that you are not interested about when you are on the computer. For someone who uses a computer every day of their life, they see hundreds of different ads a week. The more people that allow their cookies to be collected, the more the ads that you have to see every day will be of something that relates to you or something that you like. If no one allowed their cookies to be collected and profiled, you would be getting all kinds of different ads that would have no relation to you and not be of any of your interests.

By going to an internet browser’s settings, anyone can turn off cookies by disabling them under the privacy section in the settings. This will make it so that your internet information will not be profiled to help out advertisers in their campaigns.

The choice is up to you if you want to enable cookies or not on your computer. Just remember, everything is anonymous and the more people with cookies enabled, the better the ads you see will be.
