The Types And Classifications Of Vaginism

Vaginismus, sometimes incorrectly referred to as Vaginism, is of two major types and is classified into five different degrees. Here, we are going to layout a detailed description of the different types and the different degrees of Vaginismus.

The Different Types of Vaginismus

Vaginism can be divided into two basic types

1. Primary Vaginismus

2. Secondary Vaginismus

Primary Vaginismus: This type of Vaginismus generally refers to ‘first-time’ intercourse pain. It mostly affects girls or women within the age group of 15-25 and is noticed when the girl or a woman is unable to insert anything into her vagina. This type of Vaginismus mostly occurs due to physical factors as well as some psychological factors such as unfortunate past sexual experiences (abuse or rape), negative attitude towards sex, hearing negative things about sex and so on.

Secondary Vaginismus: In this type of Vaginismus, a woman who has had painless intercourse in the past starts experiencing pain while having sexual intercourse. This type is more common in women within the age group of 25-50. It's causes are mainly physical and can include strain to the vagina during child delivery, having sex in unusual sexual positions and others.

The Difference Between Primary and Secondary Vaginismus

There is hardly any difference between primary and secondary type of Vaginismus. The symptoms experienced by a woman are almost the same (pain during vaginal penetration, burning sensation etc.) in these two types of Vaginismus. Furthermore, the treatment for both these types of Vaginismus is also the same.

This was about the types of Vaginismus, which affect women in some point or another in their life. We will now take a look at some of the degrees of Vaginismus. The degree of Vaginismus can be determined by analyzing the reaction of the woman while undergoing a gynecological or pelvic floor examination. The different degrees of Vaginismus are mentioned below:

First Degree Vaginismus: In this, there is a spasm in the pelvic floor of the woman, which closes-off the vaginal opening and causes pain while having sexual intercourse. This spasm usually diminishes with time and the woman is able to undergo a pelvic exam without experiencing any kind of pain.

Second Degree Vaginismus: In this degree, there is a persistent spasm in the pelvic floor and the woman is unable to undergo gynecological or pelvic floor examination.

Third Degree Vaginismus: In this degree, the spasm in the pelvic floor is so severe that the woman raises her buttocks with the fear of being examined.

Fourth Degree Vaginismus: This degree of Vaginism is the most severe degree as the woman completely gives up and withdraws any attempt of being examined. She raises her buttocks and closes off her thighs thereby making any kind of examination impossible.

These were the different degrees of Vaginism, which a woman might experience. However, no matter whether a woman has first degree Vaginismus or fourth degree Vaginismus, it can be treated easily with the help of a suitable treatment program. The only thing a woman needs to have is the will power and dedication towards treating her condition.

Once a woman is able to dedicate herself to a treatment program, no one can stop her from treating her condition and with a high success rate. This is mainly because; the majority of the treatment programs for Vaginismus such as the vaginal dilating, Kegel exercises and others provide full relief from the vaginal pain experienced during intercourse. Also, the main essence of these treatments is they are inexpensive and can help a woman get rid of Vaginismus on her own time.
