The Man Who Became James Bond
He appeared on the big screen in a number of roles, including Lara Croft: Tomb Raider opposite Angelina Jolie and in Road to Perdition, with Tom Hanks and Paul Newman and directed by Sam Mendes. However, the film that brought him to the attention of James Bond co-producer Barbara Broccoli was the British gangster movie Layer Cake, in which he played a drug dealer on the ascendancy and tackling the old guard. The British actor was born in Chester in 1968 and grew up in the Wirral in the north west of England. After finishing his schooling at the age of 16 he joined the National Youth Theatre in London, having acted in school plays since the age of six. He later attended the Guildhall School of Music and Drama for three years from which he graduated in 1991. One of his first roles was in the Royal National Theatre's production of Angels in America, in which he played Joe, and his small screen debut was in 1996 in Our Friends in the North. As well as Lara Croft, Road to Perdition, and Layer Cake, Craig also appeared in a string of films such as Sword of Honour, The Mother and Sylvia, as well as Munich, Steven Spielberg's story of an Israeli hit squad sent to bump off members of the terrorist group that had been responsible for the deaths of a number of Israelis at the 1972 Munich Olympics. Daniel Craig was introduced to the world as James Bond in November 2005, which much controversy among some fans, which was picked up on by a number of tabloids and sparked the beginning of a campaign against Craig. The negative press only really stopped when the first footage of the film was revealed, which showed the film in an extremely positive light and early press reviews prior to release were overwhelmingly positive, which seems to have taken the producers back somewhat.
