The Role Of A Production Operative

There are plenty of different job types available within the manufacturing industry, however through the recent years the increase of companies moving their businesses abroad have led to several manufacturers closing down and the number of jobs reduced.

The manufacturing industry will involve companies producing goods on a mass production scale, these include, foods, clothes, cars and other electrical goods. Working within the food industry for example would require the entire manufacturing plant to be tidy, clean and hygienic. The standards of the plant would need to fulfil more criteria than a plant which produces clothes for instance.

One of the most popular roles seen on the job market would be that of the production operative. The production operative would usually work on the production line, ensuring the products are properly packed and secured and the quality of the products are kept in line with the company standards as well as the EU standards. The production operative will be handling high volumes of products and goods within the plant, therefore it can be a very repetitive role and would require the person to be able to work within this environment.

Due to the health and safety requirements within all manufacturing plants, the production operative must be able to comply with them and work according to the company’s policies. Besides working on the production line and ensuring the goods are kept in-line with the company standards, the production operative will also need to ensure that they keep the work place clean, tidy and safe to work in. Any problems with any of the machinery can result in loss of production which in turn will cost the company money and time, therefore regular check up of machinery is necessary and replaced to prevent loss of production.

The production operative role does not usually require much skills or experience; however it all depends on what manufacturing company the worker is in. Training will be given in all roles however some companies may require the person to have previous production experience or experience working within a manufacturing environment, there are various shifts available and some would include working through the night. The rate of pay may not be as competitive but there are company benefits in place which will counter the pay.
