Thermal Mug Basics

If you are a commuter, you probably have a thermal coffee mug. This is one of the most useful accessories of the daily commuter, and along with the stereo/radio, one of the most common. Without the thermal coffee mug, you would have the choice between chugging your coffee down while it is still warm, or sipping your rapidly cooling coffee until you wind up at work or school with a less then flavorful tepid cup of coffee remains.

The nice thing about thermal coffee mugs is that they are generally inexpensive. Most run under $25.00, and many can be found in the $5.00 to $10.00 range. Local stores almost always carry a nice variety of mugs, and if you use the Internet to find one, the selection is almost unlimited. Even Amazon, known primarily for Books, CDs and DVDs has a huge selection.

Thermal coffee mugs are usually made of plastic or stainless steel, although glass and ceramic styles are available (these are not recommended for commuting though - they can break quite easily). The basic design is the same for nearly all mugs. They have a double wall construction with air, foam or vacuum between the walls. This provides insulation and keeps the heat inside the mug. Vacuum insulates the best, and thus keeps your coffee warmer for a longer period of time. This type of insulation is primarily found on stainless steel mugs, while air or foam is usually used with plastic mugs.

For commuting or traveling, thermal coffee mugs always have a lid of some sort, usually either snap on or screw on. Although both types are common, many people prefer the screw on type as it is less likely to pop off unexpectedly and make a mess. Some lids are simple with just a hole to drink the coffee and others have complex automatic sealing mechanisms to prevent spills.

Other common features of thermal coffee mugs is a thinner base so the mug will easily fit into a standard car cup holder, a non-slip rubber base and a rubber or silicone band around the center to make the mug easier to grip. There are other specialized features available, many of which are just patented variations of the standard features, but the above covers the basic setup of nearly all thermal mugs.
