The ability for any person to effectively cope with extreme stress will naturally depend on the person's innate abilities, awareness and any positive resources that are available. Along with their individual nature, each person has their own strengths and personal challenges. Two people experiencing the same situation can have totally different reactions. In that respect, each individual has to be assessed as a unique situation, and one approach for coping and recovering from the stress may not be appropriate for the other person. There are some certain approaches, considerations and general concerns that are good to know.

It is difficult to outline any universal form of treatment that will help a person deal with extreme stress. The reason for that is it depends on the cause of that stress. It can also depend on how an event is perceived, whether it ranks low or high on the stress scale among individuals. Case in point, an extreme stress situation could create overwhelming feelings of fear. Unfortunately we may see that it takes a long time for that person to overcome that fear or they may never be able to completely get over it. Extreme stress and the variety of reactions it can produce is why it is such a complicated issue. Getting qualified professional counseling is what we feel is the best action to take in any given situation.

There is immense power and potential healing available with simple communications. By talking to people that you know, you can start the process that will allow real progress to be made. No matter how it comes out, just talking about the experience can be quite helpful. Some people are reticent about doing that, so there are other methods. Writing down thoughts and talking about it on paper is another way to express ourselves. Everyone understands there are times when we just need to let it out. During these times it can be better to just listen, rather than to say anything.

The adoption of positive and healthy behaviors is a diverse but effective strategy as well. By doing this a person will become stronger and more capable of handling extreme stress and trauma. The strategies we are talking about are positive lifestyle behaviors such as eating healthily, resting well and even exercising regularly. While there are many choices in these areas, some alternatives could be yoga, meditation and other effective techniques for relaxation. Professional treatment will be the best advice that will be fairly universal in suggestion due to the nature of the traumatic events that lead to extreme stress. Choosing what they want to do, in most cases, is something that will be ultimately decided by the individual adult. Parents have the responsibility of getting treatment for their young children and teens and that is a different issue.
