Thompson Chain Of Lakes Fishing

The Thompson Chain of Lakes offers incredible variety in fishing opportunities. There are largemouth bass, northern pike, rainbow trout, brook trout, cutthroat trout, brown trout, kokanee salmon, yellow perch, whitefish, smallmouth bass, a variety of other panfish and more. All of this is squeezed into a string of lakes that span less than twenty miles between Libby and Kalispell, Montana.

If you are of a mind to do some camping, there are plenty of options as well. Some of these options are private and some are state run. One of the better campgrounds is Logan State Park Campground. There are fairly nice amenities and that includes a shower house. All together, there is in the neighborhood of thirty campsites at Logan State Park.

The Thompson Chain of Lakes includes shoreline access to McGregor Lake, Little McGregor Lake, Lower Thompson Lake, Middle Thompson Lake, Upper Thompson Lake, Loon Lake, and Horseshoe Lake. Besides camping and fishing, if there are members of your party who enjoy boating or water-skiing, these lakes allow for these activities as well.

Most folks are going to be interested in visiting these lakes in the summer. For locals, these lakes also provide excellent ice fishing opportunities. As with all ice fishing, be aware of ice conditions and do not take chances on poor quality ice.
One of the area’s favorite activities is the annual Fisher River Valley Fire and Rescue Ice Fishing Tournament. A portion of the proceeds go to fund the department and prizes are awarded for pike, salmon, rainbow trout, and yellow perch.

If you are planning a trip, the area begins about 35 miles west of Kalispell and ends about 50 miles west of Kalispell. The road you will be taking to get to the area is Highway 2. It should be noted that some of the roads to the lakes from Highway 2 are not suitable for large recreational vehicles. If you will be driving in such a vehicle, call ahead to make sure that the roads you will take will be safe for you.

This is a beautiful area, and if you are looking for a nice side trip after visiting Glacier National Park, this might be just the place for you. The area certainly retains the rustic charm of frontier Montana. It will be a trip you will not be sorry that you made.
