Those Famous Sayings That Will Never Be Dated

I have no intention of engaging in controversy. I would never question anyone's faith or his or her right to believe in what they want. The fact remains with the Bible though that it is, in art and in conversation, the most quoted and referred to work ever written. Well, that's true in the West anyway. In fact, I just saw a mafia movie last night when a gangster said to an informant, "So, you came to get your thirty pieces, eh?" a clear reference to Judas. We come across biblical references everywhere- even corporations use its symbols. Christian or not, we are endeared to the drama of biblical scripture.

Undoubtedly our second most popular source of reference is Shakespeare. In fact, sometimes it is confusing whether we are referring to Shakespeare or to the Bible. Shakespeare himself sometimes referred to the Bible, so you could end up with the possibility of referring to Shakespeare who in turn is referring to the Bible. Or it might be Shakespeare referring to Rome or mythology. All is certainly a stage.

A third very major influence upon our imaginations comes the heroism and drama of Greek mythology. In fact, by the time of the Renaissance, by a survey of the art of the times, one might surmise that Greek mythology was once again a flourishing religion. Dante was, of course, a devout Catholic. But about a third of his 'Inferno' and 'Purgatorio' are filled with images inspired by Ovid, the Roman mythology writer. In fact, Dante's protector and guide through Hell was not an angel as one might expect but the pagan poet Virgil!

Finally, we have all those old sayings that have been handed down to us. Some, like the 'penny earned,' we can trace to people like Benjamin Franklin, but most we cannot.
