Some of us ask ourselves if childbirth classes are really beneficial. Though familiar, the childbirth class can be a misunderstood event that takes place during the course of a woman's pregnancy, usually with their partner. We are almost all sure of the birthing process and what we should expect once our baby is born, but sometimes don't know what to expect from childbirth classes.
Some women believe the childbirth classes are very necessary, while other women feel they can be a waste of time. There are various degrees of childbirth classes ranging from the more advanced ones to more basic classes. Mostly what you will learn is about your preparations for labor and delivery. Of course, you will learn other things as well. Since each pregnancy is different, it's hard to describe each experience, so the best we can do is prepare ourselves.
Pain management isn't the only thing covered in a childbirth class. Birthing terms and average time frames are also covered as well, so that the couple can be as prepared as possible when the time comes for the baby to be born.
They will help to raise awareness of the various options available to you once you are in the delivery room. For instance, you may be able to choose whether you would like a vaginal birth, or a cesarean birth. For certain women, cesarean births may not be an optimal choice, while for others it is a necessity, and the classes will help to decipher between the two. With vaginal births, pain relief (if so desired) can come in various forms. The most common of these is the epidural.
Epidurals are injected into the spine and cause partial or full numbing from the waist down. Because of the numbness, if you chose to undergo epidural anesthesia you would need to be hooked up to a monitor in order to know when contractions are taking place and you would also need direction from your doctor as to when to push, since you wouldn't be able to feel your contractions. For natural deliveries without pain medications, simple breathing techniques which can also be learned in childbirth classes can help manage discomfort during labor as well. Epidurals have proven to be of enormous relief to mothers in pain, and are also safe for the unborn child. I stated above that breathing techniques are also taught in childbirth classes. The purpose of these techniques are to help laboring women reduce the amount of pain they are experiencing in a natural way. This technique is also known as "Lamaze." The method in which the woman's birth coach (usually her partner) gives her constant support and feedback throughout the laboring process is known as the "Bradley Method."
Childbirth classes also offer a way for pregnant couples to bond, as well as the experience and information they take from them. It gives them the chance to learn baby care together and lets both parents know what to expect before, during and after the baby delivery. If you decide you don't a childbirth coach for whatever reason, you should realize childbirth classes are not solely focused on that aspect. There is so much more to be gained from attending for the pregnant couple.
