Tips About In Vogue Styles Of Gentlemen's Dapper Tuxedos

There are many different styles of men's tuxedos - from the ultra-modern to the incredibly conservative. Each one serving a different function and appropriate for a different event. To learn more about the various types and styles of tuxedos, read on.

The Traditional Tux

Typically, a tuxedo (also known as a dinner jacket) is a black, wool suit. It's single breasted and has either peaked or shawl collars. Depending on the style, you'll see an inch-wide strip of satin running up the seams on the outside of the legs. The satin covering the lapels will match. Normally, a bow tie is worn.

In Europe and the UK, this type of tuxedo is often referred to as a dinner jacket and will frequently only have one button. However, in North America, many popular and contemporary styles sport 2 or sometimes 3 buttons. Regardless of the style, the traditional tux is appropriate for black tie events, but is almost never worn before 4 o'clock.

Long Tailcoats

Tails are extremely formal and typically only appropriate when attending a dinner with the Royal Family. The long tailcoat fashion is waning and rarely suited for most events. That said, if you're invited to a "white tie" affair, then it's expected that you will wear a black tailcoat with silk lapels.

Morning Jacket

Like tails, the morning jacket is formal, but it's designed and intended for daytime wear. For example, an afternoon wedding is appropriate for this long jacket with a wide, forked tail. If you decide to wear a morning jacket to your wedding, you should change before the evening reception into a traditional dinner jacket.

Waistcoat Style

Not all men's tuxedos have to come with a cummerbund. Many today are worn with waistcoats or vests. Typically, a waistcoat isn't worn with a double breasted jacket. It's usually made of silk. Also, vests are often worn with an ascot tie rather than a bow tie.

Alternative Tuxedos

Depending on the event, ultra-modern or contemporary tuxedos can be very fashionable and appropriate. That said, for an ultra-formal event, you may want to stay away from Mandarin collars and other modern design touches that may come across as inappropriate.

Accessories and Accent Pieces

Walk into a men's formal shop and you'll often see a wall of accessories such as canes, gloves and hats - all designed to go with the traditional tux. However, these items are rarely appropriate and should be avoided at all costs as they're often seen as making a mockery of the event's formality. Instead, opt for a colorful handkerchief or a short scarf.
