Tips For Your Baby's Safe Sleeping

One of the first things your baby would tell you if they could talk would be how much they enjoy sleeping the majority of the time. This is a necessity for babies during their first months of life, sleeping helps in their early development. But, there can be complications, such as SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) as well as others. These tragedies can be prevented by keeping the baby safe while sleeping.

Misfortunes such as these are responsible for the loss of thousands of babies every year, therefore the best safe sleeping habits are encouraged. In the hospital, pay attention to the way the nurses are placing your baby in his bed. At home, a crib should be set up for the arrival of your newest family member. But, before using the crib, make sure it poses no danger.

The area in which the crib will be located should be free from air currents. Next a tight fitting sheet on a firm good quality mattress. Make sure to put the baby on his back when lying him in the crib, this lessens the chance of SIDS or suffocating.

People tend to swaddle their babies in a lot of clothes especially during winter. A better idea would be to keep the room temperature at about 68 degrees and dress your baby the same as you would dress your self for the conditions.

Be careful not to over dress, this could cause over heating. The sleepwear clothing should be of the type that is close fitting. Eliminating the frilly clothes with all the extras that are not made for sleeping. Any type of accessories the baby has worn during the day, such as jewelry or bibs should be removed.

Many times movies will show babies sleeping with stuffed animals or a bed filled with toys. This is not a safe sleeping condition. The movie may depict this, but in the real world this is dangerous. The crib should not contain any toys, pillows, blanket or other items. The reality is your baby can get caught up in this items and suffocate.

Parents often give pacifiers to their babies. This is believed by many doctors to help reduce SIDS. The correct pacifier should be chosen for the baby's age. I personally would choose a orthodontic pacifier. These are made to decrease the odds of the baby having an overbite when they are older. Nothing should be attached to the pacifier such as ribbons or yarn. The dangers of strangling or choking on them is real.

Babies are often placed on their parents bed to sleep. This is a bad idea, the possibility of rolling off or turning over and smothering are real. Often times placing baby on a bed comes up when visiting. A little planning will take care of this, pack your portable play pen, if forgotten, use your baby's car seat.

There is no such thing as too much safety when it comes to your baby. The above tips on safe sleeping may help you to feel a little more knowledgeable and allow your baby to have the comfort he needs.
