Tips From Your Budget Planner: Do Not Splurge During The Holidays

Christmas is the perfect excuse to overindulge. But just because the year’s happiest season is here does not mean that we can already blow our savings on a gift list. It may be the perfect time to show our love ones that we value them but can’t we show the same caliber of “value” when handling our savings account? Many of us make the big mistake of overspending. We end up spending more that we could actually afford. Before you start your Christmas shopping, it’s best to seek advice from your budgeting planner. They will be there to help us plot a budget that would best suit our financial capabilities and make our family and friends happy at the same time.

We’ve ask our budget planner to give shopping tips. Here’s what he told us.

Tip 1: Don’t let packaging fool you. During the Holidays, it’s common to encounter readily-packaged presents – the assorted biscuits in a cute basket, pairs of socks in a tin can, etc. These items are more expensive than wrapping the presents on your own. They may be very attractive and enticing to buy but if you want to save up, wrap the gifts at home.

Tip 2: Keep a list. Before anything else, be sure to have a list of recipients. You may be feeling generous and want to make everyone happy but be mindful of the fact that you have to work within a limited budget.

Tip 3: Wait. Do not ever shop on an impulse because this is the easiest way to mess up with your list and budget. It’s always ideal to schedule a few weekends for the shopping alone. But, if you really want to save up, you might also want to consider the option of sending late gifts. If you shop after Christmas, you’re surely going to save yourself a lot of cash.

Tip 4. Tally. Be sure to tally your expenses after every shopping trip. It’s always good to start shopping for the more important people in your life – your family, your close friends, etc. If you feel that you are almost out of budget, find other (and cheaper) alternatives for your other recipients.

Tip 5: Don’t use your card. A tried-and-tested technique which you can use if you really want to save is to pay cash. Keep coins and smaller bills in your wallet as well.
