Tips On How To Grow Grapes

Even if you are new to the hobby of homemade winemaking, you have noticed how fun the hobby can be. You have probably also noticed that the quality of the wine’s taste is far beyond many of the brands sold available in stores. That is because the natural process of producing wine in the home eliminates many of the unnatural components that go into commercial winemaking. However, if there was one component that can drag your homemade winemaking down, it would be the need to purchase the grapes in the store. That means all the unnatural herbicides used when farming the grapes will find their way into your wine. Actually, this does not necessarily have to be the case. You could also grow your own grapes and, no, this process is not as tough as some assume.

Of course, you will need a particular area in which to grow the grapes. If you own your own home, you could easily plant them in the back yard. Those who live in apartments could look into community gardens for their planting needs. Just be sure that it is a region relatively free of predators and can receive adequate sunlight.

Then, it becomes necessary to select the type of grapes you wish to grow. No, not all grapes are identical and when they ferment they create a different tasting wine. While you really can’t go wrong with any type of grape, you might want to perform a little research to ensure the grapes you plant will deliver the taste you are looking for.

Since grapes grow on vines, it is necessary to place a trellis in the ground. The vines will grow out of the ground and twirl around the trellis. Be sure to select a trellis that is both high enough for the vines to properly twirl around and sturdy enough that basic weather elements will not knock them over.

It is important that the soil is the right “blend” for growing grapes. You do not want to use generic garden soil to grow grapes. This will undermine the potential of growing high quality grapes. Instead, purchase high quality soil in a gardening store. In general, any type of soil that works fine for vegetables will work nicely for growing grapes. Of course, more expensive and higher-grade soil can be purchased as well.

Planting the grape plants is the next step, but it is not the final step. That is, you cannot plant the grape vines plants and then just hope for the best. You need to keep a watchful eye on the vines as they grow. This means you will need to regularly water and feed the vines as well as sheering away those dying vine portions that might undermine the overall health of the grapes.

When the grapes are ripe, you can pick them and send them on their way to the winemaking kit. After you make your first batch of wine, you will discover the enormous benefit of growing your own grapes. And you will even marvel at how easy the overall process was!
