Tips On Sprucing Up A Lagging Computer

When your computer slows down and gives you error messages, including registry errors, there are several things that could be the cause. It's funny how it tends to be the smallest things that bring down computers. Things like file clutter that has built up for too long, excess software that runs in the background, and malware are all contributors to the overall degradation of computer performance.

Ensure Your System Is Clean

It's probably the biggest complaint I hear from my friends: "My computer is running slow!" The biggest cause of this is usually file clutter. The best way to get rid of file clutter is to run a software tool to quickly find things like duplicate files, excess registry entries, and temporary internet files. You should also manually go through things like your downloads file and remove excess stuff that you don't need. Recently I went through my downloads file and removed a few TV episodes that I had forgotten about, freeing up almost a gigabyte.

Remove Any Malware

One big cause of registry errors in Windows 7 and other versions of Widows is corruption due to spyware, malware, and sometimes viruses. What's the best way to deal with this? You'll have to use a dedicated antispyware software tool. You can't really uninstall malware the same way that you do to software.

Once you've removed any malicious software, you should clean the registry using a registry cleaner that has been designed for the task. For most people, cleaning out the registry manually is an impossible prospect simply because the registry is much too complex.

Add Some RAM!

Once you do all this, I highly recommend that you invest in some RAM. RAM has a direct correlation with how fast your computer runs and how many applications it can run simultaneously. It's not that expensive and has the biggest impact on your overall system speed.
