Tips For Choosing A Nursery For Your Child

Your child’s education is absolutely paramount to their success and development. For any parent it’s vital to ensure you choose a good school for your child is to make that important step from infancy to childhood. However, even before thinking about schooling, you need to make sure they are placed in an environment that will stand them in good stead for their future.

Up to the age of three, babies learn from absorbing information about their surroundings – they learn unconsciously. All the information that they assimilate is used to build up their reality, so having an environment that will assist with their future learning is beneficial and this is where nurseries play a massive role.

Nurseries are excellent at developing a child’s social skills, by allowing them to build friends and learn about independence. In terms of skills, they will develop the fundamentals of colours, numbers and letters. Nursery will also introduce your child to the idea of structure and routine whilst also ensuring they are having fun too.

Therefore, it’s very important for you and your child to be comfortable with your nursery of choice. Here are some tips to help establish the right nursery for your child:

Visit lots of nurseries

Don’t just go with the first nursery that you come across. Make sure you draw up a list of ones that you want to visit. You need to consider logistics and practicalities, so pick ones within your budget and ones which are either close to your home or within easy commutable distance. When you take your child along its important to observe how they react to the surroundings and to the staff. For the parents it’s important to have a number of questions to ask the staff as well.

Facilities and Equipment

Observe and inspect the toys and equipment that the children will be using. Are they clean and fully operational? Are the toys fairly new? Also ask the staff how often they renew their equipment and if they decide upon toys based on the children’s interest. Are the facilities suitable for young children? If there is plenty of space and designated areas, as well as clean facilities then this is a good sign.

Session Structure

It’s important to know that you child will be looked after properly. Are they split into groups, and if so how many are in a group? Are they grouped by age or development stage? Is the day structured split up so there is time to learn and also the freedom to play? If you would like your child to have more freedom then choose a nursery with less structure, however, for less freedom you may want a nursery that has more of a regime.

Their Policies

Ask them about their policies when dealing with certain issues such as medication and accidents. Ask them about their procedures too. They should have guidelines in place and this will tell you a great deal about the nursery itself. Also consider your child’s toilet needs. This is a very important time in your child’s life as they will be moving from nappies to underpants, so it’s important they learn the right toilet training, so do the staff offer one-to-one support?

Does Your Child Actually Like It?

Go with your gut instinct and ask your child afterwards what they liked and didn’t like. Observe their behaviour and how they interact with their surroundings, other children and the staff. It’s very important for your child to be happy, this should be you priority first and foremost – after all, they will be spending the next couple of years at nursery, so it’s important they enjoy it whilst they are there.
