Tips For Clean Towels

In these days of good washing machines, you’d think that towels should be perfectly clean each time they are washed, but this is not always so, even though they look clean, towels can be dirty due to a build up of mildew and germs. For instance, if you throw the towels in to wash just before you go to bed and hang them out the next morning, they will have had several hours of being damp in which to breed germs and become mouldy. Just because you cannot see mould spores, doesn’t mean they are not present.

So - especially if you don’t wash in hot water - tip a bit of disinfectant into each load and when you’ve finished, cycle the washing machine with clean water to make sure bacteria and mouldy water are rinsed out. Bleach is good to kill bacteria and mould, and can be used on white towels.

You may want to do this test: - take a clean towel, place it into a boiler with water and washing powder and boil it on the stove for several minutes. You might be surprised at the colour of the water when you’ve finished. To make towels fluffier, add two tablespoons of Epsom salts to your washing machine, along with your usual softener.
