Tips For Running In The Winter
Running in the winter presents a different set of challenges from running in warmer weather. Here is a short list is things to do when doing winter training to help keep you comfortable and safe. 1. The first aspect to keep in mind when running in the winter is dressing properly and being sure to dress in layers. How you dress can be the difference between a successful run, and a tedious and uncomfortable one. One aspect to keep in mind as well is the color of what you wear. Bright (but not white) colors will contrast very well against snow, as will black colors during the daytime. Wearing white clothing in a snowy environment or dark clothing at night can make it so cars will not be able to see or avoid you. 2. Proper footwear is crucial. Your shoes should not only have large tread on them, but should feature an anti-slip device to help keep you from slipping on snow or ice. Some folks actually put screws directly into the soles of their shoes when running in the winter. Another product of use is something called “Stabilicers”. These are designed to fit any running shoe and are an alternative to putting holes in your expensive running shoes. Spikes are also an option to consider; these are racing shoes with holes in the bottom where you can screw in spikes. This is a good choice if you are heading into cross country conditions that feature icy or muddy terrain. 3. If it is windy as you start your run, try to run into the wind at the start of your outing. This way you will have the wind working with you on the return trip, when you are probably a bit tired. 4. Eyes are often an overlooked body part when it comes to protection. Always wear safety glasses or sunglasses if it’s windy to avoid possible damage to your eyes. 5. Some people have the notion that, just because you’re not hot and sweaty, that hydration is not a big concern. This could not be farther from the truth. Drink lots of fluids before, during, and after running in the winter. 6. A few important accessories to have with you are identification (in case you are injured) and money (in case conditions get so bad that you need to take a cab or bus). By paying attention to these simple rules, you can stay comfortable and safe while running in the winter. You will be able to maintain your fitness level throughout the winter season, and be primed and ready for spring. For more information, check out marathon preparation, and Run to Finish.
