Tips For Using Reusable Shopping Bags

When we think of reusable shopping bags, grocery shopping comes to mind most often. However, you can use these bags for all your shopping trips. Just ask politely and most stores are happy to put your goods in the reusable bags upon request. The reusable bags do help save the environment by cutting down on the use and manufacturing of disposable bags, but you have to use them not just have them around the house. There are a few tips you should keep in mind to help care for and remember to use the reusable bags. These tips make using the bags safe and easy.

The reusable shopping bags only help if you actually remember to take them with you on shopping trips, and for safety reasons, it is recommended that you not store them in your trunk. So, what can you do to remember your reusable bags? Place or store the bags near something that you must have before leaving the house. If you take them grocery shopping, keep them with or near your coupons. If you take them clothes shopping, store them near your purse or wallet. Choose a place where the bags are in sight before you walk out the door, so you do not leave them at home.

You need to care for your bags properly. This means inspecting them regularly for holes or tears in the handles. You do not want to pack your groceries or other items inside and the bag tears or handles break. Wash the bags regularly as well. Most reusable shopping bagsare safe to throw in the washing machine. Wash them at least once a week or more often if necessary. Always replace any bags that show signs of wear to avoid mishaps. When properly cared for, the bags last through numerous uses.

When you store the bags do not fold up all bags and place them inside one bag. It is best to store reusable shopping bags by hanging them by the handle on a hook where air can circulate and moisture can evaporate. Storing them this way also helps the bags retain their shape. Never overfill the bags. While it is true they can withstand more weight than disposable bags, you do not want to put too much stress on the stitching and handles. A good rule of thumb is to pack them no more than three-fourth of the way full. They will last longer if you pack them correctly.
