Toilet Training Mistakes

Every parent is thankful when toilet training is accomplished. No more dirty nappies or puddles on the floor! It is natural for a parent to want to get this awkward stage over with as quickly as possible, but some children simply can't be hurried when it comes to potty training. Making the whole situation into one that is negative and stressful for the child will hinder the whole process and make it take longer than it needs to.

Don't have unrealistic expectations about how long it should take to potty-train a child, not about the age that this can be accomplished. A lot depends on the child. Some children train quickly, others resist, or find the whole thing a big puzzle. It certainly won't happen overnight or in a weekend. Often it takes up to six months to potty train a child to the point you can trust him to go in the right place. It is certainly a mistake to punish a child because he has pooed in his pants instead of telling you he needed the toilet.

Another mistake is to insist on potty training at times that are stressful for your child, such as moving house or getting a new baby. And if your child wets the bed, don't expect potty training to fix the problem, because bedwetting is unrelated to potty training.
