Tonsillitis – A Right Old Pain In The Neck

Anyone who has suffered from tonsillitis knows that it's far from a walk in the park. In fact, your average sore throat seems like a holiday in Hawaii by comparison! With ice cream for every meal until symptoms subside, it's perhaps the only cure for an addiction to Ben and Jerry's.

What is Tonsillitis?

The tonsils are situated behind and to either side of the uvula (the little flap of skin at the back of the throat) and it is these that become infected when tonsillitis has been contracted. And that's basically what tonsillitis is - an infection of the tonsils. This infection can be caused by either bacteria or a virus, but is more commonly the latter. While it's more common in children, adults are quite susceptible too and it's not unusual for certain sufferers to contract the infection time and time again.

2. Sore throat and difficulty swallowing.
3. Common cold symptoms such as a cough, headache and nasal congestion.
4. Ear ache and headache.
5. Fluctuating body temperature with both fever and chills.
6. Body aches and general fatigue.

Is Tonsillitis Contagious?

Unfortunately, the question of whether tonsillitis is contagious is among the most common and the answer is always a resounding yes. And sadly, the answer doesn't change whether we're discussing the viral or bacterial form of the illness. So, whether it's to avoid a sneeze, a hand shake or a quick kiss, you're better off steering clear of tonsillitis sufferers.

Tonsillitis Treatments

In many cases, tonsillitis will usually dissipate of its own volition without any treatment at all. That said it is still important to ensure that you remain hydrated and try to keep eating where possible to retain enough energy to fight the infection.

Of course, there will be some discomfort with all tonsillitis infections and for this reason standard pain killers such as Paracetamol and Ibuprofen will suffice. Additionally, there are a wide range of topical sprays and lozenges available at all pharmacists that will provide some element of relief.

Should the symptoms persist, consult your doctor as in more severe cases of infection, you may be prescribed antibiotics or if tonsillitis is particularly recurrent, removal of tonsils may be required.
