Top 10 Baby Names Of 2009

When deciding on a name for your baby, it can be helpful to look at what has been popular this year and even in previous years. You may just find that perfect name on the list or if you're looking for something more unique this list can help narrow down your own list.

Every year, on the Friday before Mother's Day, the U.S. Social Security Administration releases its list of top baby names registered in the United States during the previous calendar year. In 2009 Isabella made its move to the top after placing second for the past few years, knocking Emma from its one year long reign as number one. Isabella is of Spanish origin, comes from the name Elizabeth and means "God's Promise." On the boys' side Jacob is in its eleventh year at number one. Jacob is Hebrew in origin and means "may God protect."

From one to ten on the girls' side are: Isabella, Emma, Olivia, Sophia, Ava, Emily, Madison, Abigail, Chloe, and Mia. On the boys side are: Jacob, Ethan, Michael, Alexander, William, Joshua, Daniel, Jayden, Noah, and Anthony.

There are a few new additions to each list. New to the girls' top 10 is Mia. Mia is derived from the name Maria and is Swedish in origin. One meaning attributed to Mia is "temple". On the boys' side Jayden and Noah are new. Jayden is English in origin and a variant on the spelling of Jaden. The meaning of Jayden is "thankful or God will judge". It is a unisex name, but is more commonly used for boys. Noah is Hebrew in origin and means "comfort", "long-lived", and "repose."

When contemplating the top ten baby names list it's important to realize so are a lot of other parents and parents to be. For example, in five years there will be quite a few Isabellas and Jacobs on the playground. However, the most important thing when choosing a name for your child is that it is meaningful to you, whether or not it is currently popular.
