So, you’ve caught onto the craze of poker, and need some pointers to get an edge over your competitors. Here is a short list to improve your game and make you top dog at your next game.
1) Learn all of your opponent’s tells – Every person has specific actions, or tells, that give away their cards. The best players are able disguise their tells, but even the best players have trouble completely hiding their emotions. So, the first step is to learn your opponents inside and out. This will make them easier to call their bluffs and make sure that your hand is better than your opponent’s hand.
2) Bluff only when you have the advantage – Never bluff if you think that your opponent has a very strong hand. Bluff if you think they’re bluffing, or if their hand is a weak pair, otherwise, avoid bluffing. Most new players often bet too aggressively and rely too much on luck. This makes their chip stacks drop dramatically in a short time period, making them quick losers. You can avoid this fate by betting conservatively and using your cards to your advantage.
3) Utilize bets to your advantage- If you are the blind bet, you are either automatically in the round or have to put in a little extra to play. Because of this, many players decide to play even if their hands are terrible. This is a horrible tactic because it relies too much on luck. Instead, fold if you have bad cards, play if you have good cards. It’s as simple as that. And also, if you are not a big blind or small blind, you have the leisure to fold with no cost! So be patient and wait until you have a good hand to play. Otherwise, you will be setting yourself up for a big loss.
4) Finally, remember to be relaxed – the more relaxed you are, the better you will be able to respond to any and all crises. If you are freaking out at every raise or bluff, you will quickly have all your chips taken. Instead, be calm and collected, and make sure to think clearly about your game strategy before you do anything.
Hopefully, these four tips will make you a first rate poker player. Don’t forget, it is a game, so have fun with it and keep these four tips in mind!
