Top Tips For Tenerife Travel

The popular Spanish island of Tenerife is a hit with holiday makers thanks to the temperature staying above 20 degrees for most of the year and rainfall being pretty much none existent in summer months. As well as the stunning weather there is also a whole host of attractions to see from rugged mountains (including the active volcano Teide) to lush forests which are perfect for a shady hike. As well as the natural beauty, Tenerife is also known for its varied and often raucous nightlife. Favourite spots for British holiday makers include Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos which offer strips of bars, clubs and restaurants right on the beach.

• Don’t worry too much about brushing up on your Spanish. Although it’s always a good idea to know the basic lingo to ask for directions and order food, as Tenerife is such a tourist hotspot, most locals in these areas will be able to speak English. If you are going off the beaten track then be prepared with a few Spanish lessons and a phrase book.

• Like England, Tenerife has had a change in the law when it comes to smoking and since 2006 smoking in most public places has been illegal. However, many bars and restaurant do have designated smoking areas so be sure to ask where these are or look for other smokers before you light up.

• The tap water in Tenerife does have a very high mineral content which could cause stomach upsets so it’s wise to use it just for washing food and cleaning your teeth. Buy bottles of mineral water to stay hydrated and avoid feeling ill in the sunshine.

• Book your hire car well in advance as you are likely to pay above the odds at the airport due to inflated tariffs. Don’t forget to pack your driver’s licence too.

• Equivalent books and magazines can be expensive in Tenerife so make sure you pack plenty of good reads to see you through hours of poolside sunbathing.

• Check the weather before you travel as many websites offer weather reports seven days in advance which will help you decide what outfits and extras to take. Don’t forget that the south of the island tends to be warmer than the north so if you’re heading south make sure you pack lots of t-shirts and shorts.

• Although Tenerife is known as a safe place for visitors, you should still exercise caution and be sensible with your valuables. Only take with you the spending money you need for your day or night out and leave valuables (including your passport) in a safe place at your accommodation.
