Torchwood Series 3- New Series, New Team, New Format

The groundbreaking and controversial BBC science fiction drama TORCHWOOD is set to return for a very different third series. After the shocking finale to series two, fans have been desperate to find out if the show would return for a third series, and if so, just how it would come back after losing two central characters. Now, series three has been confirmed and announced, but it does seem that it will be getting a change in format. Five episodes have been announced, and it has come to light that this five-part story is to be series three in its entirety! The story is to be broadcasted over the course of a single week, and is to shake things up not just for the whole team, but for Captain Jack Harkness in particular.

The BBC’s Julie Gardner confirmed in Torchwood magazine that not only is the show to return with a much shorter run, but it is also to move over to BBC1 after starting on BBC3 and then moving to BBC2 for its second series. I’m curious to find out why the series will be so short though- surely this spells the end for the team? Then again, the crew have aid that they are trying to work out how the show will develop in the future, and this is one step towards finding a new format for the Doctor Who spinoff. To many, the five part story idea sounds as though it may be a great big send-off for the series. Actually, the shorter run will enable the makers to concentrate more on the production and not have to spread the budget out for thirteen episodes, meaning those that we do see will look even better than usual. This five-part miniseries starts shooting in August 2008, for broadcast in early 2009. I wonder if there will be any crossover with the 2009 Doctor Who specials?

Something else that is getting fans excited is the forthcoming audio episode of Torchwood that is set to be broadcast on BBC Radio 4. The episode will be 45 minutes long and be broadcast as the Radio 4 Afternoon Play for that day and it has been written by none other than Joseph Lidster. The episode will feature John Barrowman, Eve Miles, Gareth David-Lloyd and Freema Agyeman in their TV roles as the Torchwood team, along with guest stars. The story is said to be based around a Particle Accelerator, and coincides with the recent opening of the largest accelerator in existence in Switzerland (The Large Hadron Collider).
A range of TORCHWOOD action figures will be released in September 2008. Originally intended for release in August, the figures (Captain Jack, Gwen, the Cyberwoman and a Weevil) are based on series one. A second set of figures is planned for the end of the year, including other cast members and later creatures. There is no word yet as to whether series three will feature any creatures of villains from earlier episodes.
