Toronto A Destination For Retirement Homes?

When people think of retirement destinations, they often think of something tropical, but Toronto retirement homes present consumers with a wide variety of choices that are appealing for many reasons. From its secure, if sleepy suburbs like Mississauga, Brampton and Oshawa to its downtown core, Toronto is sought after by Canadians and Americans as a safe, smart destination in retirement.

Let's look at a number of reasons people choose retirement homes in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).

• close to family. Toronto remains one of the most accessible cities in the world with public transportation ranging from the subway, streetcars and buses of the TTC (Toronto Transit Commission) to GO buses to numerous underground and indoor walkways that make the downtown easy to traverse in any weather. (Yes, Toronto does tend to get some snow during winter).
• investment property. Toronto remains one of the hottest real estate investment markets in North America through thick and thin. Many seniors and families considering retirement living assume that suites or rentals are the only option but there are other, wiser ways to live in retirement. For example, retirement condos offer an ownership and investment opportunity, while options such as life lease are open ended and can benefit seniors who are interested in savvy investment.
• close to the action. Many active adults love living close to the action downtown Toronto. While there are sports attractions galore (I know some may argue that Toronto's sports teams leave something to be desired) there are also many cultural delights. The Royal Alexandra Theatre and Roy Thomson Hall are just two truly awesome venues close to downtown Toronto that present a wide variety of events that appeal to a more discerning audience.
• health care system benefits. Canada remains a destination for retiring Canadians as health insurance to live or travel abroad can be very expensive. For those with Canadian citizenship or dual citizenship it is very easy to find ways to get health care coverage in Toronto for medicines and other costs, through provincial health insurance coverage in Ontario (or other provinces, for that matter).

Toronto is also very appealing as a beautiful city renowned for its cleanliness and safety. Other attractions include the waterfront in summer, copious family attractions that will draw children and grandchildren to the city to visit as well as numerous festivals like the Toronto International Film Festival, Caribana and other events.
