Tour De France Without Lance; Almost Lost Our Pants
What is a Tour De France without Lance? For all who pedal for glory, it’s a chance to come in ahead of second place and cast honor on their long-denied nations.
But what was it for the US without Lance but a chance to lose our pants?
Well, we had Floyd Landis (Why do the names of our leading bikers all contain a conspicuous letter “L”?)
He appeared to be our great American hope. But could he out peddle a world of determined bicyclers and save our unlikely winning streak?
At first, he was streaking to victory. Then, in one day, he fell from grace, to eight minutes behind the leader.
But, as a comeback would have it, just when we thought without Lance we lost our pants, on came Flying Floyd.
He regained the overall lead on Saturday, a feat that pretty much assured that he would take the title in Paris.
Then come Sunday, there he was, another gringo cycling to triumph in Paris, winning what we may now call The Tour De Floyd.
