Costa Rica has hundreds of waterfalls throughout the lush rain forests and mountainous areas many of which are not accessible to the public; however there are some destinations that do allow visitors. Because of the natural geography of the peninsula, the rainwater that falls flows towards the Montezuma side, so there are many waterfalls with water in the year round. Most have swimming holes, and two have rope swings, and one is ideal for cliff diving.
Montezuma Falls
Montezuma Falls is perhaps the most famous waterfall in Costa Rica. It is three separate falls. To reach the first falls, start at the ocean near Hotel Amor and walk up the river for 10-20 minutes, here you will reach the highest waterfall, with a huge swimming hole.
To reach pool 2 and 3 climb up the steep path to the right of pool 1 and follow a trail up and to the right. Eventually you will find a steep trail leading down, with a rope to help you descent. From here you will be between pool 2 and 3. You can jump from 40 feet up into pool 2 or keep climbing up the then you can jump from 8-15 feet into pool 3.
Delicias Falls
This is a beautiful cascade of 40 meters high not far from Montezuma Falls. It is in the next river valley to the south. You may be the only one to visit the falls all day. These falls have a series of “Jacuzzis” small depressions filled with water, perfect for romantic interludes no one will be watching but the howling monkeys.
Cocolito Falls
A two hour hike down the beach from Montezuma, Cocolito Falls is a magical place. If you take the trip, you won’t be disappointed. They are beautiful, often with a rainbow in them. The beach just before it is a perfect cove, with white sand and turquoise water. It is a very hot walk down the beach, so leave as early in the morning as possible; you are also likely to see wild animals on the beach at that time of day
Montezuma is a site that attracts free spirited visitors for its mystical ambiance. Around the area there are trails, surfing, biking and birding not to mention the beautiful beaches.
