Traffic Exchanges - Business Builders Or Time Wasters?

Do an online search for traffic exchange online, and you'll come up with literally millions of hits. Traffic exchange sites have come into the limelight with social media sites like Digg and StumbleUpon, but can they really help you build your business?

While the ease of the internet makes it seem like you should be raking in millions of dollars per month by now (didn't you get that email?), the truth is, like any business, building a site takes work. And you need to choose your marketing methods wisely. Just like in traditional advertising, just because it may seem to be the most economical way to go doesn't mean it's the best. On the other hand, you need to think before you fork over thousands of dollars for advertising that doesn't do its job.

With this in mind, choose your traffic exchange sites carefully and be consistent. Expect to put at least an hour a day into your venture, with payoffs starting at the two to three month point.

Check out the following sites for some examples of what to expect from a traffic exchange site:

Royal Surf:
royalsurf.com

Build your site's traffic, medieval style! This site allows you to surf pages for credits and complete in contests and online jousts to earn even more traffic to your site. There are two levels of membership, one is free while the Royal Knight charges a monthly subscription fee.

The basic membership allows you surf credits, banner credits and text link credits. The Royal Knight includes the same features as well as unlimited page links and 1,000 monthly credits to use for traffic, banners, or text links in any combination you choose.

Both give bonus referrals and cash incentives on direct referral purchases and upgrades, but the Royal Knight option gives double the amount of credits (50).

The cool thing about Royal Surf, besides feeling like being at a virtual Renaissance Fair, is that you can compete for higher surf ratios. Winning a joust boosts your ratio, and their are miscellaneous referral contests and sign-up bonuses you can work for.

The joust is similar to role-playing games like Dungeons and Dragons, but a lot simpler. There are cursed swords and bronze coins, all tying into the site's theme and design. The only thing about the joust is that it changes each time you play it, so you never know what you're going to run into.

StumbleUpon Exchange:
suexchange.com

Jump on the StumbleUpon bandwagon with this free site. You must earn three credits to list your site, but ratios are 1:1. This is great for a free site. The theory behind this is a little different, but its simple and easy to use.

You must have the StumbleUpon toolbar and a free account. At first you wont see much traffic. But once it hits StumbleUpon, you can expect to see a steady amount of traffic. Unlike normal traffic exchanges, where its best to list your homepage, use a sub-page such as specific product or free resource such as a newsletter subscription or article.

The site is a little restrictive and clunky, and doesn't allow you to build a downline like Royal Surf. But they run many referral contests.
