Training For A Marathon Goal

She has been a runner — not fast, she says — but hasn’t run a half-marathon or participated in a triathlon in three or four years. So she stepped into her running shoes in May, deleted some of her kids’ rap songs from her MP3 player, and began preparing for a challenge well beyond weight loss.

“I had gained some weight and didn’t have the extra motivation to get it done, even with the classes I was teaching,” says Sharp, 45. She set a goal to lose weight and lost 40 pounds over four months, combining a diet that severely limited calories-per-day intake, smarter food choices, smaller portions, plenty of water and exercise.

Losing the weight, she decided it was time to take up running again.

Joining the Des Moines Marathon Running Club in June helped Sharp keep on task. She knows that others are going through the same pains and challenges and they’re all there to help her through it. She has learned to stay focused and listen to her body. If something is bothering her, she gets it checked out so she can get back on task sooner.

What has she found to be the biggest obstacles to training, especially comparing half-marathon training to full marathon training?
Time, she says. It’s a big factor in scheduling training runs, especially if you have to work around work, family, kids’ events and other obligations. (She also operates a small gourmet coffee business.)

So, when she trained for the half-marathon, it involved less time, fewer miles.
As for combating the agony of the feet, knees and legs, it pays to wear good shoes. Before the Norwalk runner started training for this run, she never wanted to spend a lot of money on running shoes. And she’d wait to change them until they were worn down. When she signed up for the running club and decided she was running the full marathon, she knew she should get new shoes — good shoes.

The club held a clinic on running shoes conducted by triathlete Matt Migonis who works at Scheel’s Sporting Goods in West Des Moines. He watched the way she ran, measured her feet, and helped pick the right running shoes for her, at a club discount.
When running a marathon, and putting that many miles on shoes (for her, it’s Asics brand), she’ll buy another pair a month or so before the marathon.
