Transporting A Fridge – How To Guide

Empty the fridge

Of course the first step is to remove all items from all sections of the fridge. Unfortunately this might mean throwing away food so either plan some hefty meals in the days leading up to the move or invite some hungry friends who will naturally be happy to take some food from you. Take out any drawers, shelves and containers after you have removed all the produce still remaining. If you have any other adornments on the exterior like fridge magnets, remove them and transport them separately. If there is anything loose inside the fridge, damage can be caused to the interior.. If for some reason you cannot remove the containers you should tape them securely within the fridge.

Defrost

Let the fridge defrost a good two days before being moved as the melted ice could cause damage during the move. Clean the inside of the fridge and allow the fridge to dry out completely before it is moved. Close the doors and tie them shut once the fridge is dry and defrosted. You can do this with a rope or cord; try not to do this with tape if possible because when it is removed it can leave visible marks.

Moving the fridge

Now comes the difficult bit. Unless you have a very small fridge it is always best to use a heavy goods dolly for transport. Position the dolly underneath the fridge and slowly place the fridge on top. You should use a friend to steady the dolly and another to raise onto the dolly itself.

Before you have done this you should of course measure the fridge and compare to the width of the doorframes and hallways it will be moved through. If you can help it, a fridge should not be put onto its side or transported as such, it should always be transported vertically.

to get the fridge down a flight of stairs, guide the dolly one step at a time. You will need to enlist the help of your mates to be at either side of the fridge to steady it when it is being moved.

Transport provider

When you hire a man and van to move your fridge, it is essential to check that their vehicle has enough vertical space, as it should be transported upright. If you have no other option than to move it on its side, consult the manufacturer and read the instruction manual to see whether there are any specific steps to take. Ask your courier to secure the fridge in their vehicle to prevent it from moving around during transit..

Upon arrival

After the furniture courier service is done, return the fridge to its upright position if necessary and make sure the path is clear to its new destination. Again, tilt the fridge whilst somebody holds it either side and slide the dolly from underneath it. If the fridge has been on its side, wait 24 hours before plugging it back in so that oil from the compressor will move back to its proper place.
