Travelling To Or From Murcia Airport

I know what a horrible experience it can be when you are travelling with children, carrying luggage and arriving at an airport you haven't been to before in the height of the season when it's hot and late at night. With this in mind I have put together a quick guide for travellers to Murcia Airport which contains the eight most important things you need to know when arriving at or departing from Murcia San Javier.

1. How to Get to Murcia Airport

When you are booking your flight to Murcia Airport there are 5 airlines operating from 16 UK airports offering regular scheduled and charter flights. If you are flying from the London or the South you can get flights from Bournemouth, Bristol, Gatwick, Luton and Stansted Airports. Other UK airports include Edinburgh and Glasgow Prestwick in Scotland, Belfast International, Cardiff and Blackpool, Leeds Bradford, Manchester International, Liverpool and Newcastle in the North, Midlands’ travellers have the choice of Birmingham and East Midlands Airport.

To get the best deal make your reservation as far in advance as you possibly can, travel mid week and do not be afraid to use different airlines for the outward and return journeys.

2. Landing at Murcia Airport

Once you have landed and left the aircraft you should head towards the baggage reclaim hall which is on the ground floor and has four luggage carousels used by domestic and international flights. Look for the TV monitor at the entrance which indicates which belt your luggage will appear on. You will also find the public toilets situated near these screens.

3. Hiring a Car at Murcia Airport

If you have hired a car which you need to pick up from Murcia Airport, then once you have collected your luggage go through to the main public arrivals lobby where you will find desks for Auriga Crown, Avis, Centauro, Europcar, Goldcar Rental and Solmar who are the six rent a car agencies based at the airport as well as the tourist information desk. It is a 48km drive from Murcia San Javier Airport to Murcia City Centre which should take you about 40 minutes. The route is well signposted but make sure you check any driving directions you are not sure about with your car hire representative before you set off. Also check you are familiar with all the controls of your rent a car as this is your opportunity to ask any questions.

4. Taxis at Murcia Airport

If you are planning on getting a taxi to your holiday destination you will find the rank outside the terminal building. By law standard Murcia Airport taxis can only carry up to a maximum of 4 passengers (including children) by law, and they do not provide baby or child booster seats. If you are travelling in a large party, are carrying a large amount of luggage or if you require special child seating then it is a lot easier if you pre-book a private transfer.

It costs about €50 for a taxi into Murcia City centre and to La Manga on the Mar Menor. Cartagena will cost you €40 and Torrevieja is €35. These fares will vary depending on the time and day you are travelling as late at night or on Sundays and bank holidays will be more expensive.

5. Buses at Murcia Airport

If you are thinking of using public transport there is just one public bus service from Murcia Airport to the bus station in the city centre where you can get connections to Cartagena, Corvera, Compoamar, Torrevieja, Alcantarilla, Ceuti, Archena, Abaran and Cieza. The number 73 runs three times a day, 7 days a week from the airport, departing at 17.45, 19.15 and 22.45. The journey time is 45 minutes and the cost of a single fare is €7.00.

6. Parking at Murcia Airport

If you are leaving your car at the airport there is just one car park which is located directly opposite the main terminal building. The rates for parking are €0.43 for the first half hour; €0.53 for the next 30 minutes; €0.80 per hour thereafter. Daily maximum up to four days €8.90: daily maximum from the fifth day €7.10. If you are returning a rent a car drive it to the hire car parking area which is the turn AFTER the parking sign. You cannot get the car into the hire spaces from the general parking area.

7. Checking in at Murcia Airport

To get your homeward flight go to the departures lobby where there are 18 check-in desks along the back wall and ticket sales offices for Air Berlin, Iberia, Jet2, Monarch, Ryanair and Swissport.

8. Shops, Bars & Cafes at Murcia Airport

There is also a Merlia multi shop in the main lobby passenger zone of the airport where you can purchase souvenirs, toys gifts and sweets and If someone is seeing you off then you can have a farewell drink with them in the Cafetería Serunion which is to the right of the entrance doors and is open daily from 06:30 to 22:30.

Once you have checked in and cleared security you can have a look round the duty shop which sells wines, spirits, cigarettes, tobacco, perfume and cosmetics or do some last minute gift shopping at Foodstuffs which sells local produce suitably wrapped for transport back to the UK and Las Lilas which sells ladies accessories, jewellery, handbags, footwear and clothes.

If you want to get a snack and drink while waiting for your flight to be called then Cafeteria Serunion is open daily from 06:60 to22:20 or Subway serves baguettes, wraps, salads and drinks and is open Monday to Friday, from 13:30 to 21:30 and on Saturdays and Sundays, from 08:30 am to 21:30.
