Treating Acne With Tea Tree Oil

Introduction

There are several natural treatments for acne. The one that seems to be the most popular is tea tree oil. Tea tree oil is derived from leaves of the Melaleua alternifolia a plant native to Australia.

Steaming the leaves and extracting the oils to obtain the tea tree oil, which has a yellow color with a nutmeg like smell. The oils are then used for treating acne.

How it works

Tea tree oil contains terpinen4-ol, which has an anti-microbial activity that kills bacteria that causes acne. By applying directly to the lesions it will kill skin dwelling bacteria, which is believed to cause acne.

Tea tree oil vs. 5% Benzoyl Peroxide

Research as shown that 5% Benzoyl Peroxide lotion is more effective in treating acne than tea tree oil. Tea tree oil may take longer to cure acne lesion but there is less side effects in comparisons to using 5% Benzoly Peroxide Lotion. The common side effects are itching, stinging, burning and dryness.

Application

When using tea tree oil for acne treatments make sure it’s about a 5% solution and never apply in full concentration. To make a 5% mixture, take about 95 ml of water and add about 5 ml of the tea tree oil.

Apply by taking a cotton swab dabbed in the tea tree oil. Using the cotton swab apply the oil directly to the acne lesions. Keep on over night and wash off in the morning.

Safety

Tea tree oil should not be applied in full concentration to the acne lesion. If the oil gets into your eyes it will cause irritation. Follow all the safety precautions on the bottle. Contact your doctor to make sure this is an effective treatment for your acne.
