Treatment For Interstitial Cystitis
Here is a list of the most common treatments that are available today for Interstitial Cystitis. One or more of these treatments combined with a good support system and some life style changes will help you be on your way to a symptom free life. 1. Bladder bath or instillation. This is a treatment in which the bladder is filled with a medication or a solution that has to be held in for a certain period of time, varying on average from ten to fifteen minutes before the bladder can be emptied. This type of treatment is given at intervals over a six to eight week period. This type of treatment usually shows positive effects after three or four weeks. One of the downsides to the treatment is that the patient may have a garlicky order coming from their skin and/or breath for up to three days after the treatment. 2. Bladder Distention. There have been many patients that have shown much improvement in their particular symptoms after this treatment. This procedure has even been used to diagnose the condition as well as treat it. Studies have not yet proven why this is such a positive method of treatment. One of the downfalls of this treatment is that immediately following the treatment patients have reported that their symptoms actually get worse (temporarily) then subside again only to get better, improving greatly over a two to four week period. A time delay in the relief, so to speak. 3. Medication. Oral medication has been shown to repair defects that perhaps developed in the bladder's lining. Use of this form of treatment may take up to six months to see a change in the urgency to urinate. Some of the downfalls to this treatment include some temporary hair loss and pregnant woman cannot use this. It has also been shown that medication treatment can affect the function of the liver, so this should be monitored closely through regular blood work. As with any medical condition, you should seek the advice your trusted physician to determine what course of treatment is the right one for you. What may work well for one person may not help another with the same condition.
