Tutoring Others In College

Funding a post-secondary education can be a challenge. Many students at colleges and universities find themselves borrowing money or living on extremely tight budgets. Finding a part time job can help with expenses, though it can be difficult to find one that fits a student’s odd schedule. Being able to set your own hours can be an asset, and one job which allows this is tutoring.

You can tutor anyone from young children through to your peers, so long as you are comfortable teaching the subject. If you’re tutoring peers, you may find that teaching material you’re studying will help reinforce the concepts for yourself as well. Tutoring younger students is a fantastic way to gain experience if you are planning on becoming a teacher or working with children or youth.

There are many subjects where you can tutor. Mathematics is a frequent one, as many student fall behind in math, and struggle to catch up once they do. If a basic concept is not understood, or hasn’t been taught well, all subsequent concepts based on the original are a challenge. This causes problems as students fall further behind. Science is another subject where knowledge can be cumulative. And many students struggle with basic research and writing skills and may need a tutor to help them learn those skills.

There are commercial programs that hire university students to provide tutoring services, both for school age students and at colleges and universities. Conversely, you can simply advertise on campus or online, marketing yourself to your target audience. If you choose to work independently, take some time to discover the going rates in your area, easily done by exploring other postings. Highlight on your strong areas, make sure that you are working with ages you feel confident and competent teaching and create a teaching program. It helps to consider what you would like in a tutor if you were struggling with a subject, and apply that to your style. It makes sense to start off slowly, with only a couple of students at the most, while you determine whether this indeed is a job you enjoy and can be do successfully.
